Super Mario Movie is coming in 2022, as Nintendo announced in a Corporate Management Policy Briefing presentation that they are working on a CG film that is being overseen by Mario creator himself Shigeru Miyamoto as well as Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri.

In their policy briefing statement, Nintendo assured fans that the film is in production and will be distributed through Universal Pictures:

Another way we are delivering Nintendo entertainment to a wider audience is with the Super Mario CG-animated movie, which is scheduled for theatrical release in 2022. Production is moving ahead smoothly, thanks to the collaboration between Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, known for the Minions movies, and Nintendo’s Representative Director and Fellow, Shigeru Miyamoto, who is serving as co-producer. The movie will be distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures.

The announcement of a Super Mario movie comes right during the 35th Anniversary celebration of “Super Mario Bros.”, with Nintendo lining up a list of new games, merchandise, and events to celebrate the milestone in the Mario franchise. This will be the second attempt at bringing Super Mario to the big screen, as a live action Super Mario Bros. film was made starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo in 1993. It was poorly received and loosely adapted elements from the games it was based on, but recent years have seen the movie develop a cult following for its camp and humor. Nintendo aims to course correct that and make a proper adaptation of their iconic video game franchise.
